Why Job Seekers Are More Inclined to Consider Part Time Work in 2024

Going into 2024, salary was ranked as the most important priority for job seekers. It seems intuitive that job seekers will be looking for full-time jobs, as they provide a stable income and numerous other benefits. However, according to this study conducted by Nexxt,  job seekers are actually now opting for part-time work rather than full-time. Let’s explore the reasons behind this.

  1. Flexibility

When asked to rank their priorities for jobs, flexibility was ranked third, jumping two spots from its previous position in 2023. Why are employees focusing more on job flexibility now? Part-time jobs offer flexibility that full-time jobs inherently can’t. With part-time jobs, employees have more freedom with the hours they work and the hours they have free. Many people juggle finishing their education, childcare, personal projects, etc. all while working a job. Part-time jobs allow people to earn a livable wage while also reducing stress and helping people better manage their time.

2. Work-Life Balance

Work-life balance comes along with this flexibility. A good work-life balance allows an employee to dedicate time and effort to their job while also making time for loved ones, hobbies, and self-care. This significantly improves employee mental health and job satisfaction, which increases job retention.

3. Additional income

Salary was ranked as people’s first priority when they consider a new job. Often, people take on part-time jobs in order to increase their income. Usually, they take on this job along with another full-time job or other part-time jobs. Again, the flexibility of part-time jobs allows employees to work multiple jobs at once, giving them more sources of income.

4. Increased variety + satisfaction

The top reason job seekers said they were looking for a new job in 2024 is “time for a change.” People are starting to move away from the standard, 9-5 office job. They’re looking for variety and change. Part-time jobs allow one to explore different roles and industries without being tied down to a single full-time commitment. This variety can lead to greater job satisfaction as individuals engage in diverse tasks and responsibilities. Furthermore, it can lead to a transfer of skills from one field to another, improving work performance.

Ultimately, the preference for part-time jobs reflects a larger change in job seekers’ priorities. People are starting to value the ability to manage their time effectively, maintain a healthy work-life balance, and pursue diverse and fulfilling career paths. As the job market continues to evolve, it’s important to understand and adapt to these preferences will be essential for employers aiming to attract top talent.
